Victoria’s destination race of the season the Barwon Heads Triathlon returns to the Bellarine Peninsula this month for the fifth consecutive year.
This year, Victorian clubs have an opportunity to get even more involved with event organisers offering marquee space onsite.
Sponsored by 13th Beach Health Services, the event attracts close to 750 competitors which include approximately 300 first-timers.
“Because we have so many first-time triathletes, it’s always a great atmosphere. We have great prizes for the winners and heaps of spot prizes for everyone. The local community really get behind the event, and we’re grateful for their support, ” said Lincoln Beckworth, Director of event organiser SW Events.
The short-distance fun-tri race, which was formally known as the Kondak Triathlon, consists of a 400m swim, 14km cycle, and a 4km run. Water safety will also be provided by the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club.
The event attracts all levels of fitness and ability, including some of Victoria’s top age-group triathletes. Past winners include Adam Conquest, Kirby Bourke and Catherine Allison.
“The event has one of the best triathlon swims you can do. It’s usually calm with protected waters that are assisted by the current in the river. This makes the swim a lot easier for those who aren’t confident in open water, added Beckworth.
The swim will start on the sand next to the Ozone Jetty, the bike course will take riders along 13th Beach Road, and the run leg is out over the Barwon Heads footbridge with the turnaround mark at 2km.
