Triathlon Victoria has made water safety a top priority once again this summer, supporting 11 clubs to prioritise water safety this Summer through the ‘Champion Club’ program in partnership with the ‘Play It Safe By the Water’ campaign and Life Saving Victoria.
Running for it’s third year, the Champion Club program sees the selected clubs named as leaders in water safety to the Victorian triathlon community. Triathlon Victoria will provide them with support to deliver water safety messaging and best practices to club members and the wider community, with the aim of increasing education on safety around water this Summer.
Three clubs will be joining the program for the first time, with Davey Black Triathlon, Melbourne Triathlon Club, and Momentum Endurance set to spend their first Summer as ‘Champion Clubs’. They’ll join eight returning clubs, including Bayside Triathlon Club.
President of Bayside Triathlon Club, Adrian Currie, said that the club is looking forward to building on from their involvement last season to continue to support and develop strong water safety culture and habits at the club.
“I think it’s a fantastic program. The support will allow us to ensure that we have the resources and trained coaches to keep our members are safe,” Adrian said. “It especially provides great comfort and confidence to beginners who are new to open water swimming and needing additional re-assurance.”
Clubs were selected to participate in the program based on their commitment to water safety, ability to deliver open water swim sessions and their connection to the local community. All participating clubs have committed to implementing the Triathlon Australia Open Water Swimming Guidelines as part of the program, with each club set to award a ‘Water Safety Ambassador’ responsible with actively promoting and encouraging water safety within their community throughout the 2018/19 triathlon season.
